Spliffs |
The recent announcement that the much-debated
Lambeth decriminalisation policy is to be applied on a nationwide
basis makes this book highly topical - and useful! Spliffs offers a
fun, accessible guide to everything you will need to know about dope
and dope-smoking. The book begins with a short history on dope
through history; the next two chapters provide guides to all the
different types of grass and hash and to the various joint-rolling
styles (both chapters feature specially commissioned, cut-to-white
photos). Paraphernalia (from papers to pipes) is covered in the
fourth chapter, while Chapter Five offers a fastmoving review of
famous and infamous dopeheads through history, fictional as well as
real-life. Chapter Six takes the reader on a guided tour of
Amsterdam's famous headshops and cafes, and reviews the UK's own
developing 'Cafe' scene. The final chapter reviews the debates about
the dangers/benefits of dope-smoking. The book concludes with an
extensive glossary of terms and bibliography.Spliffs is produced in
association with the world's leading magazine in the subject area,
High Times. As well as the commissioned identification and 'how-to'
photos, the book features many archive pictures. |

Spliffs 2 |
Spliffs 2, the follow up to bestselling title 'Spliffs',
is packed with everything of interest to the cannabis connoisseur.
The first chapter contains an analysis of the processes for growing
your own strain. There is an examination of the plant (and the very
different male and female specimens), plus the arguments for indoor
and outdoor growing, hydroponics, an assessment of the best means of
cultivation, seeds and hybrids/cross pollination. The second section
explores the music behind the drug, from hippy festivals such as
Woodstock to the Bob Marley-led reggae explosion. The link between
rap music and cannabis and the rise of Snoop Dogg, Dr Dre and Eminem
is discussed, as is the success of Afroman's 'Then I Got High' (UK
No 1 for three weeks in 2003) and music events like the Up in Smoke
Tour and MTV's Cannabis Weekend. Chapter Three is a delight for the
discerning smoker. It features more than 50 items of smoking
paraphernalia - including bongs, pipes, blunts, vapourisers,
hookahs, grinders and scales - specially shot against white
backgrounds with explanatory captions. It is a testament to the fact
that for many dope smoking is more than a hobby, it's a way of
life.Chapter Four features potted biographies of the world's top 50
pot heads, from the obvious (Bob Marley and Howard Marks) to the
unlikely (Cary Grant, Pierce Brosnan and Prince Harry), while
Chapter Five is styled as a travelogue, taking a snapshot of
cannabis use worldwide - where it's best to score and where should
definitely be avoided! To end the book there is also a section on
cannabis cocktails so you can while away those summer evenings
enjoying your favourite tipple mixed with cannabis tincture. Packed
with feature spreads including hilarious true life stories, famous
dope busts, hemp fashion and herbal highs to name a few, and
featuring a comprehensive chronology, Spliffs 2 is the ideal
purchase for the dope enthusiast. |

Spliffs 3 |
Reprising the success of Spliffs and Spliffs 2, this
book offers yet more information and entertainment for the 'budding'
cannabis enthusiast. In this volume there are chapters on religion
and the herb (including the African tribe who not only smoke weed
ceremonially but also roll giant joints in order to smoke bees out
so that they can retrieve honey from the nests!), the struggle to
get the drug legalised around the world, and an in depth look at the
films that have glorified the drug over the years. A largely
pictorial section (Skins and Things) take a trip through the array
of rolling papers of the past and present and a look at their
cultural significance from peace symbols of the Sixties to the
smiley faces of acid house Nineties. While the section called 'A
Smoker's Life for Me' is for the smoker who wishes to devote their
life completely to the demon weed - from dressing in the morning
wearing hemp fashions, through eating hemp pasta at lunch while
writing a letter on hemp paper, to having a hemp beer or champagne
in the evening with friends!Feature spreads intersperse the
narrative on topics such as Marijuana and Art, Cannabis Etiquette
and the tongue-in-cheek 'How to be a Drug Smuggler'. |

Mr Nice |
During the mid-1980s, Marks had 43 aliases and 25
companies, all laundering money from dealing cannabis. After a
world-wide operation, he was arrested and sentenced to 25 years at a
State Penitentiary in Indiana, but was released in 1995 after
serving seven years. This is his own story. |
Howard Marks |
 |
 |
|
Mr Nice & Mrs Marks |
Howard Marks's story has passed into hippie
folklore. At one time, the world's then most wanted man had 43
aliases, 89 phone lines, and 25 registered companies. Thanks to the
technical brilliance of his networking skills, it was estimated that
he was trafficking as much as a tenth of all the marijuana smoked in
the world. But, this is only half the story. Intimately involved
throughout was Marks's wife Judy. Now, for the first time, she tells
her own side of the tale. Judy was already involved in the hippie
drug underworld before she met Howard. Her sister Natasha became a
smuggler and served time for it in Mexico, while her eldest brother
Patrick was involved in a number of scams himself and eventually
became, among other things, Howard's accountant and money-launderer.
Rather than the shrinking wife at home, Judy was involved with the
drug-running scams, and often had to act as money courier and
go-between abroad when Howard was stuck without a passport or
identity. As if his absences were not difficult enough for the
family, Judy spent eighteen months in jail herself. From living the
high life hobnobbing with movie stars and euro trash to mixing it
with the IRA and CIA, then the long, increasingly desperate years on
the run, "Mr Nice and Mrs Marks" is about the exhilaration of their
criminal life, and the hell of not knowing what's happening when
your husband stops telling you the truth and your life is steaming
out of control. It is also a love story, and together Judy and
Howard come across like a hippie Bonnie and Clyde. Far more than a
retelling of Howard's story, this is a warm, touching and often
funny account of Judy's unique role in an extraordinary
husband-and-wife double act that spanned over three decades. |

Smoke Screen |
When Allen Long's attempts to make a documentary on
drug smuggling stalled for cash, smuggling seemed the obvious way to
raise the necessary money. Millions of dollars later the film still
hadn't been made; but Long's own life as a pioneering dope smuggler
had played out like a Hollywood movie - the seat-of-the-pants rides
in decrepit DC3's into the Colombian badlands, the near misses with
law enforcement agencies, the fortunes earned and blown, the models,
the partying, the Studio 54 years, being busted ...Written by Robert
Sabbag, the undisputed master of the genre, Smokescreen is a
hilarious piece of hair-raising reportage that will keep your pulse
raising to the very last page. |

Snow Blind |
It tells the true story of legendary cocaine
smuggler, Zachary Swan, whose exploits and scams in the sixties and
seventies baffled police and customs officials alike. Robert
Sabbag's riveting account of Swan's brief career provides a
compulsive insight into the cocaine underworld in which all the
double-dealing, crazy characters and paranoia are captured
brilliantly. The combination of Sabbag's sandpaper dry wit and
meticulous research, with Swan's roller-coaster ride lifestyle, have
made Snowblind a book of enduring appeal. |

Cannabis |
Twelve millennia since it appeared, cannabis remains
one of the most popular and controversial drugs consumed today. This
revised, paperback edition of the successful Cannabis is an
informative and entertaining guide to the history of 'weed'. Here
one will find a story - from ancient myths and legends to today's
on-going controversies - that stretches over 12,000 years; its many
uses - spiritual, medicinal and recreational - in countries all
round the globe; the laws that have tried to suppress it; and the
industry, both 'professional' and quite literally 'homegrown' that
brings the weed to its millions of consumers. In addition, readers
will discover just what makes smokers 'high' and the way cannabis is
being rediscovered as a vital painkiller for such diseases as
cancer, arthritis and multiple sclerosis; it lays out the great
debate: is cannabis really a 'gateway drug', leading users to heroin
and crack; and on a lighter note there are cannabis recipes, the
wide-ranging slang of cannabis and for those who've always wondered,
a step-by-step guide to rolling a 'joint'. The book seeks to end all
misinformation and neither preaches nor condemns. It is as factual
reference book which will enlighten reader to all aspects of smoking
one of the world's oldest cultivated plants. |

Cannabis: A History |
To some it's anathema, to others it provides relief
from crippling pain: to others still, it is a legal anomaly and
should be decriminalized. Whatever the viewpoint, and by whatever
name it is known, cannabis - or marijuana, hashish, dope, kif, weed,
dagga, grass, ganga - incites debate at every level and its impact
on the world's cultures and economies is undeniable. Dating back to
the Neolithic period, the history of cannabis is a tale of medical
advance, religious enlightenment, political subterfuge and human
rights; of law enforcement and customs officers, cunning smugglers,
street pushers, gang warfare, writers, artists, musicians and
happy-go-lucky hippies and pot-heads. |

Cannabis Britannica: Empire,
Trade, and Prohibition 1800-1928 |
"Cannabis Britannica" explores the historical
origins of the UK's legislation and regulations on cannabis
preparations before 1928. It draws on published and unpublished
sources from the seventeenth century onwards, from archives in the
UK and India, to show how the history of cannabis and the British
before the twentieth century was bound up with imperialism. James
Mills argues that until the 1900s, most of the information and
experience gathered by British sources were drawn from colonial
contexts as imperial administrators governed and observed
populations where use of cannabis was extensive and established.
This is most obvious in the 1890s when British anti-opium
campaigners in the House of Commons seized on the issue of
Government of India excise duties on the cannabis trade in Asia in
order to open up another front in their attacks on imperial
administration. The result was that cannabis preparations became a
matter of concern in Parliament which accordingly established the
Indian Hemp Drugs Commission. The story in the twentieth century is
of the momentum behind moves to include cannabis substances in
domestic law and in international treaties. The latter was a matter
of the diplomatic politics of imperialism, as Britain sought to
defend its cannabis revenues in India against American and Egyptian
interests. The domestic story focuses on the coming together of the
police, the media, and the pharmaceutical industry to form
misunderstandings of cannabis that forced it onto the Poisons
Schedule despite the misgivings of the Home Office and of key
medical professionals. The book is the first full history of the
origins of the moments when cannabis first became subjected to laws
and regulations in Britain. |

Jesus Weed |
In 1973, aged 17, Gerald Taylor left his New Zealand
home and didn't return for four years. The story of what happened in
between is "Jesus Weed" - a tale of travel, lapsed Catholicism,
chess, and the strongest marijuana mankind has ever known. A
good-looking, adventurous young lad, Gerald is driven by a lust for
adventure, a lust for women and a lust for life. Launching himself
onto the hippie trail, he travels to Thailand where he comes into
contact with Jesus Weed for the first time. This is enough for him
to come up with his own personal mission statement, dedicating
himself to: 'The study and use of marijuana in all its myriad forms.
How to grow and refine the sacred herb and, wherever possible, get
shit-faced in the pot-growing strongholds of the planet.' From there
his adventures spiral out of control. By hustling at chess and
dealing in the best weed, he encounters some of the world's most
exotic citizens.Whether he's seduced by Mud wrestlers in San
Francisco, trained as an invisible assassin by an Irish druid,
kidnapped and held as a sex slave in Mexico or being taught the
finer points of resin production by Afghan shepherds, in each new
place his adventures are madder than the last. "Jesus Weed" is a
riot from beginning to end. |

Marijuana Time: Join the Army, See
the World, Meet Interesting People and Smoke All Their Dope |
Anyone can survive a war - all you have to do is not
get shot. But how the hell is a soldier supposed to survive the
peace? Ken Lukowiak could handle Goose Green and Wireless Ridge: it
was the life after that seemed so hard - so slow, so repetitive, so
absurd. But then Belize came to his rescue, or rather Belize's
number one product, marijuana. Smoked in industrial quantities, it
can make military life seem almost bearable. And what better way
could there be of seeing out service in this last armpit of empire
than through a dizzy haze of pungent, potent dope smoke? The best of
times, the worst of times, marijuana brings them all - and in the
end it brings our hero to the joint in the form of Her Majesty's
Prison, Shepton Mallett. But Lukowiak's not complaining: he's well
and truly out of it - seems for as long as he can remember, he's
been doing Marijuana Time. |
